‘Universal Creativity’ Q&A with The Travelin’ Chicks

Chelsea & Kinsey are two sisters from Gloucester, Ma. They travel the world with nothing more than their back backs and a camera. Combined they have been to 40 countries. Asia, South America and Europe have been the continents they have explored most and the majority of them have been together. You can check out a list of their individual Countries on their site and see a load of badass photos.

What’s also cool about this story is that after following @TheTravelinChicks on Instagram & Twitter we actually bumped into them in Liverpool!

We got the chance to interview the duo because we wanted to know a little more about what kinds of ‘universal creativity’ they have come across, having been to so many places.

How long have you been on the road?

We have been on and off the road traveling since we graduated from high school in 2004. Our travels have been solo, study abroad programs and as a duo together. No matter the way, there is always something to learn and experience.

What kinds of creativity have come across?

Creativity is part of human nature and can be found across this amazing world. It’s not hard to find and is one of the reasons we love travel. We have come across mind blowing street art in South America. Detailed artisanal work in the markets of Asia was a site to behold. Chefs and street stall vendors created mind-blowing plates served with passion that had our taste buds singing. Even street performers across the globe act, sing and surprise audiences. Any type of creativity you can think of you will see, so hit the road!

Which cities/countries in particular seemed to have the most diverse range of creativity?

The first country that comes to mind with most diverse range of creativity is Argentina. Constant music filled the streets; the street art was everywhere and added to the hectic feel of Buenos Aires, flea markets filled squares with laughter, art food and music. The graveyards alone could have been museums. Looking back, Argentinians exude creativity.

Have you learnt anything about your own creativity whilst travelling?

We have learned that the creative process isn’t something you can just turn on and off. When it flows, it flows, but you can fine tune it and learn more. It is something that can be frustrating yet completely exhilarating. We have learned to leverage our different types of creativity to enhance our mutual project. It has taken us a while but now we feel like we know how to accent each other better.

What impressions did you get of the UK art scene?

The U.K. art scene is really some of the best. Not only does the UK have the outstanding collections in the more traditional arts but your music scene really rivals no one. Add in all the funky galleries and pop up art fun and the U.K. can really stand on its own. There is something for everyone.

What’s the most original idea you've come across and where did you see it?

One idea we came across was actually in Dover, England. It was a street art festival. Not only did they have professional street artists creating art but they involved the community and taught different elements of spray paint art. We missed the festival itself by two days but saw how they turned a really rundown looking area into a place with a trendier, friendly vibe all while involving the community. Loved it!

Graffiti capital?

Graffiti capital would have to be a tie between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
